An Invitation From The Rhododendron Society

Edwards Gardens is the lovely setting
for a few hours of gardening with
The Rhododendron Society

The Rhododendron Society does wonderful work tending to the Rhododendron beds in Edwards Gardens. The Society would welcome any North Toronto members to join them. The group meets regularly on the second Saturday of each month from 10am to 2pm.

For those who can't wait to get digging, there will be some work going on Friday June 3rd at 9:30am. Gardeners will be preparing beds and making room for new plantings. Members should wear strong shoes and long pants because there are red ants.

Meet at the Ken Duncan Rhododendron Dell on the west side of the creek in Edwards Gardens.

For more information members should click here or contact NTHS and Rhodo Society member Mary McLean.

Happy Gardening.

Plant & Garage Sale Success: May Meeting

Checking out the selections at the
2011 NTHS Plant and Garage Sale
The Annual North Toronto Hort Plant and Garage Sale was a huge success.  There was a steady stream of members who came to the May meeting early to drop off divisions and cuttings of their favourite plants. And there was a mad rush once the sale got underway.  The selections were great ranging from the rare and unusual (variegated lily of the valley, variegated solomon's seal and fern-leaf peony) to the tried and true workhorses of the garden (lady's mantle, sweet woodruff and iris).

A special thank you goes out to the Plant and Garage Sale team who helped to organize, price and sell all the selections.  The plant and garage sale is North Toronto's biggest and most important fundraiser of the year.  Proceeds go to pay for things like rent, speaker fees, and printing. The participation of our members means North Toronto can continue to bring you monthly meetings, fascinating speakers, a newsletter, annual show guide and more.  Thank you to everyone who participated.

The 2011 NTHS Plant Sale Team

A treasure trove of goodies at the garage sale tables.

The June Meeting is coming up fast.  It will feature a talk on modern daylilies.  A limited number of plants will be available for sale.  More information will be available on the blog in the weeks ahead so be sure to check back soon.

Happy gardening.

Fun With Flowers: May Meeting

Shirley Binns demonstrates a modern
mass design called "Bonfire."

Have fun and be creative.  That was the advice North Toronto's Shirley Binns had for experienced and novice floral designers alike at the May meeting. Shirley demonstrated a line design, a parallel design and a modern mass design.  "We are all creative," said Shirley.  "Floral design is an art: it's just a different medium."

Shirley had to admit that floral design competitions come with more than a bit of stress but she has an easy remedy. With a twinkle in her eye Shirley says, "Everything goes into place better once you have had a glass of wine."

Thank you Shirley for sharing your inspiring designs, advice and humour with North Toronto Hort.

North Toronto Wins Big at the OHA District 5 AGM

The 2010 Show Guide designed
by Andy McCraw wowed the judges.
Great news!  The North Toronto Horticultural Society won two awards at the Ontario Horticultural Association District 5 Annual General Meeting held on Saturday April 30th.

Both the 2010 Show Guide and the May-June 2010 issue of the Newsletter won 1st Prize in their respective categories.

Congratulations to Andy McCraw for his Show Guide design and to Newsletter Editor Irena Hrzina.

A Summary of the Day's Events
North Toronto's past President and current Financial Services Director Cathy Kuchynski attended the AGM. Here's her summary of the day's events:

Madsen's Gardens on Bayview Parkway in Newmarket was a very nice venue. The room was a converted greenhouse with espaliered trees down the centre aisle which was very lovely.  Mary Ann and Elwood Ankenman, Dorothy Cartmell, Don Beard, Julie and Reg Forbes, Lennard Joki, Barbara Fraser, Greta Roman and I represented North Toronto Hort and enjoyed the day.  Paul Zammit, Director of Horticulture at the Toronto Botanical Garden, gave a wonderful talk on gardening for the seasons.  The afternoon presentation was on Xeriscaping.  The food was great and there was lots of it starting with yogurt, bagels, muffins and pastries for breakfast.  Lunch was lasagna and salad with more pastries.  Tea, coffee and juice were available for everyone to enjoy all day.  Lennard won a rain barrel in the raffle.  Don won a garden basket and I got to take home the orchid centrepiece. A great day was had by all.

Thank You
The North Toronto Horticultural Society extends a great big thank you to the Newmarket Horticultural Society for hosting this year's AGM.

May Meeting
Remember to show your support for North Toronto Hort at the May meeting. Our very own Shirley Binns will do a flower arranging demo. It's also the night of our annual Members' Plant and Garage Sale. Hope to see you there.

Happy Gardening!
